Zuckerman Spaeder LLP is pleased to announce that partner Nicholas M. DiCarlo has been named a Rising Star of the Plaintiffs Bar by the National Law Journal. This honor is part of the publication’s Elite Trial Lawyers Awards series, which “honors firms and attorneys who have delivered groundbreaking legal strategies, achieved significant results, and showcased an unwavering commitment to advancing justice for their clients.”

Mr. DiCarlo’s recognition highlights a remarkable track record of recent legal accomplishments. These achievements include helping obtain major wins for a long-time insurance client, leading the highly sensitive representation of sexual abuse victims, securing a precedential pro bono appellate victory, and establishing a niche practice area within the firm.

“We are extremely proud of Nick’s well-deserved recognition,” firm chair Caroline Judge Mehta reflected. “He is an exceptional colleague and embodies the very best of Zuckerman Spaeder – brilliant legal instincts, a deep sense of justice, and a tireless commitment to his clients. Whether in the courtroom or leading innovative practices inside the firm, Nick brings vision, passion, and results.”

On behalf of Lloyd’s of London, Mr. DiCarlo played a central role in two outcomes, totaling over $200 million in value, in complex insurance coverage cases in California and Ohio. The cases, litigated in state courts, required Mr. DiCarlo to develop a comprehensive understanding of intricate state laws and to hone unique arguments that allowed the firm to prevail on different legal grounds in each jurisdiction. These decisions represent landmark wins for the client and are helping to define the boundaries of insurance coverage for public nuisance liability – an increasingly important area of law.

Mr. DiCarlo’s litigation style is defined by empathy and conviction, traits on full display in his work on behalf of child sexual abuse victims in actions against the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). He helped pioneer a novel legal theory, creating new paths for former scouts to seek justice. Since BSA’s bankruptcy, Mr. DiCarlo has led the firm’s representation of over 1,400 survivors in the proceedings, managing a team responsible for securing substantial monetary awards for the firm’s clients.

Additionally, Mr. DiCarlo demonstrates strong leadership in service to the firm. He was a driving force behind developing a specialized practice representing genetic testing companies in bringing reimbursement lawsuits. As a client lead, he has developed deep expertise and has achieved terrific results, including a recent multi-million-dollar arbitration award against a major health insurer.

Mr. DiCarlo is one of fewer than twenty attorneys nationwide to be named to this year’s Rising Star list. He and his fellow honorees will be celebrated at an award ceremony on July 10 in New York City.
